CHINA CONSTRUCT ROAD AROUND OLD COUPLE'S HOUSE

Luo Baogen and his wife insist on living in the half-demolished building in the city of Wenling, in Zhejiang province, China because they believe that the relocation compensation offered by the government is not enough.

Now the only building left standing, the five storey block is a strange sight as cars drive around it while the couple remain living inside.

To ensure the couple's safety, adjacent rooms in the building have been left intact but all their neighbours have moved out, according to local media.

The road paved through the Xiazhangyang village leads to the Wenling railway station and is yet to be officially opened.

Mr Baogen and his wife believe that the compensation on offer would not be enough to cover their rebuilding costs.

In the People's Republic of China, during most of the Communist era, private ownership of property was abolished, making it easy for residents to be moved on – but now the laws have been tightened up and it is illegal to demolish property by force without an agreement.

Property owners in China that refuse to move to make way for development are known as 'Nail Householders' referring to a stubborn nail that is not easy to remove from a piece of old wood and cannot be pulled out with a hammer.

Earlier this year, Hong Chunqin, 75, and her husband Kung, who live in the two dilapidated buildings with their two sons, had initially agreed to sell the property in Taizhou, in Zhejiang province and accepted £8,000 in compensation.

But then she changed her mind and refunded the money once work on the road had started.

BREAKING NEWS : CHELSEA FC SACK ROBERTO DI MATTEO

Chelsea have sacked Roberto Di Matteo following the 3-0 defeat to Juventus on Tuesday evening which left the club's prospects of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages hanging by a thread.

The Blues needed a positive result in Turin to maintain hopes of defending their European crown, but Antonio Conte's side ran out comfortable winners with the English side looking likely to become the competition's first ever holders to be eliminated at the group stage.

And with their Premier League form slipping after a bright start, owner Roman Abramovich has decided to sack the manager, with the club insisting that "results have not been good enough".

A statement on Chelsea's official website read: "Chelsea Football Club has parted company this morning with Manager Roberto Di Matteo.

"The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season."

The club face a season-defining period over the coming weeks, with a clash against Premier League champions Manchester City on November 25 followed by the must-win game against Nordsjaelland on December 5.

UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA SHUT DOWN

The management of the University of Abuja on Monday shut down the institution following students' protest.

The protesting students reportedly disrupted the second semester examination that was already underway and blocked the Abuja – Gwagwalada road and the main entrance to the University campus causing huge traffic congestion.

Soldiers and policemen are presently making attempts to restore law and order in the University  as at the time of filing in this report.

Some of the protesters, who spoke with Channels Television, said the problem started when students of the Faculty of Engineering protested the inability of the school authority to produce a time table for their examination; even when students in other faculties have started theirs.

This is not the first time in 2012 that the authority would have to shut down the University following students' protest.

In April, the management of the institution closed the University after a violent protest by students resulted in a breakdown of law and order in the school community.

The students had protested against the suspension of four courses offered by the University

The Federal Government had suspended some courses including Medicine, Veterinary medicine, Engineering and Agriculture because the departments offering these
courses have failed to get accreditation from the National Universities Commission.
