The
Ghanaian Embassy in Lagos has begun the interrogation of a Ghanaian
woman and her Nigerian husband over allegations that the couple
kidnapped three children in Lagos.
The arrested woman, who gave her name as Patricia Demordze,
confirmed to the police that she was a Ghanaian resident in Nigeria.
A reliable police source, who pleaded anonymity, told the News
Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that a senior officer from the
embassy interrogated the 23-year old Ms. Demordze.
According to the source, though the embassy official did not
disclose his findings after the interrogation, he said he was going to
inform the Ghanaian government of the development.
NAN gathered that the interrogation was sequel to a letter
written by the Lagos State Police Command, informing the Ghanaian
Embassy of the alleged involvement of its citizen in the crime.
The couple allegedly kidnapped three children from different
families in Lagos.
The couple was apprehended in Abuja by operatives of the Special
Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) from Lagos.
According to the police, the suspects, at various times,
collected a total of N36 million as ransom from their captive’s parents
before releasing them.
The police said the suspects specialize in kidnapping children
from wealthy families-- where they had earlier worked as either driver
or maid.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, who confirmed the
arrest, said the couple has many cases to answer in Nigeria, Ghana and
Benin Republic.
Mr. Manko stated that the suspects are currently being
interrogated by SARS operatives, adding that as soon as investigation
was completed, they would be charged to court.
